Building a Greener Future: South St. Paul’s Sustainability Initiatives

South St. Paul is actively implementing sustainability initiatives to enhance environmental stewardship and community resilience. The city’s commitment is evident through various programs and partnerships aimed at fostering a greener future.

Community-Led Sustainability Efforts

In 2024, the city introduced the Sustainability Recognition Program to honor residents, organizations, and businesses contributing to environmental sustainability. This initiative, guided by the Sustainability Task Force, encourages community involvement in eco-friendly practices. Nominations open annually in August, with awardees recognized at a City Council meeting in November.

Urban Forestry and Tree Canopy Restoration

Addressing the loss of nearly one-third of its boulevard and park trees due to the emerald ash borer, South St. Paul has partnered with Tree Trust to revitalize its urban forest. Efforts include planting diverse tree species in parks, along boulevards, and in schoolyards, as well as engaging residents through discounted tree sales and volunteer planting events. These actions aim to create a more resilient and diverse tree canopy.

Water Quality and Conservation Measures

The city sources its drinking water from four municipal wells tapping into local aquifers. To protect this vital resource, residents are encouraged to adopt practices such as using zero-phosphorus fertilizers, properly disposing of hazardous waste, and conserving water during drought conditions. These collective efforts help maintain water quality and ensure a sustainable supply for the community.

Addressing Climate Change Impacts

Minnesota is experiencing significant climate changes, including increased temperatures and more frequent intense storms. These shifts pose challenges such as flooding, infrastructure damage, and health risks. South St. Paul is proactively addressing these issues through comprehensive planning and community engagement to build resilience against climate-related impacts.

Through these initiatives, South St. Paul demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, aiming to create a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
