Building a Sustainable Future in South St. Paul

Building a Sustainable Future in South St. Paul

South St. Paul is actively implementing initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and community resilience. The city’s commitment is evident through various programs and partnerships aimed at fostering a greener future.

Environmental Concerns and Stormwater Management

Non-point source pollution, resulting from contaminants like motor oil, fertilizers, and debris entering waterways via stormwater runoff, poses significant challenges. To combat this, residents are encouraged to:

  • Limit chemical use on lawns and gardens.
  • Compost yard waste and utilize mulching mowers.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous materials at designated facilities.
  • Maintain vehicles to prevent fluid leaks.
  • Dispose of pet waste appropriately.

These actions collectively contribute to improved water quality in local rivers and lakes.

Sustainability Initiatives

The city integrates sustainability goals into land use and development decisions. Participation in the GreenStep Cities program allows South St. Paul to track progress on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental best practices. Community initiatives, such as reusable bag programs at the Farmer’s Market and stormwater improvements in local parks, further demonstrate the city’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Tree Canopy Restoration

In response to the devastation caused by the emerald ash borer, which led to the loss of nearly one-third of the city’s boulevard and park trees, South St. Paul has partnered with Tree Trust to restore its urban tree canopy. Efforts include planting diverse tree species in parks, along boulevards, and in schoolyards, as well as engaging residents through discounted tree sales and volunteer planting events. These initiatives aim to create a more resilient and diverse urban forest.

Water Quality and Conservation

South St. Paul sources its drinking water from groundwater via four municipal wells. Residents are encouraged to adopt practices that protect water quality, such as using zero-phosphorus fertilizers and properly disposing of hazardous household waste. The city also monitors for contaminants like PFBA, ensuring levels remain well below health-based values established by the Minnesota Department of Health.

Community Recognition and Engagement

To celebrate and promote local environmental stewardship, the Sustainability Recognition Program honors residents, organizations, and businesses contributing to sustainability efforts. Nominations are accepted annually, with awardees recognized at a City Council meeting.

Through these comprehensive efforts, South St. Paul demonstrates a strong commitment to building a sustainable and resilient community for current and future generations.
